A refrigerator that keeps running but slowly warms is one of the calls we take most across Englewood Cliffs and North Jersey affluent corridor. If the compressor hums while the compartment loses cold, the trouble is usually airflow, defrost, or the sealed system rather than a full power loss.
Notes by Brand
The same symptom shows up differently across brands. Here is how we approach refrigerator not cooling on the units we service most:
- Sub-Zero: A warm refrigerator over a cold freezer points to the refrigerator's sealed system, its evaporator fan, or a defrost fault on that side. The service light may also flag a clogged condenser.
- Wolf: Wolf does not build standalone refrigeration, so a cooling call here means the paired Sub-Zero unit. We diagnose the Sub-Zero side directly.
- Bosch: Look at the evaporator fan, the air damper, and the defrost circuit. Bosch counter-depth units are sensitive to blocked vents when packed too full.
- Miele: MasterCool units may show a fault indication. We test the fan, sensor, and sealed system and confirm airflow across the compartments.
- Viking: Clean the condenser first, then test the evaporator fan and sealed system. Coastal-area condensers clog faster from salt and dust.
- Liebherr: An E1 sensor fault or a temperature alarm often rides along with a warm section. We measure the sensor and check airflow.
- KitchenAid: Test the evaporator fan, damper, and defrost circuit, then the compressor and start components if airflow checks out.
Symptoms, Causes & Checks
| Symptom | Likely Cause | What We Check |
|---|---|---|
| Warm section | Airflow, defrost, or sealed-system fault | Test the fan, defrost circuit, and sealed system |
| Compressor runs, no cold | Sealed-system or start-component fault | Test the compressor, start relay, and refrigerant charge |
| Ice on the evaporator | Defrost heater or sensor fault | Test the defrost heater, sensor, and control |
